The holidays are a time to celebrate, cherish those you love and give to those in need. It’s a time to celebrate giving the gift of hearing to children like Dustin Neerhof. He was born with microtia and atresia of his left ear and hemifacial microsomia. Dustin was diagnosed with Goldenhar Syndrome, and living with hearing loss.
Despite his struggles, Dustin was a happy little boy who loved his identical twin brother and being cuddled by his parents. After undergoing multiple surgeries by 9 months of age, Dustin’s parents were told their family insurance plan did not cover hearing devices or hearing tests. His parents were heartbroken, and very concerned Dustin would be missing out on many sounds and struggle to develop vocabulary. Thankfully, his mother Jaalah found out about the Ear Community through their audiologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado and their Cochlear representative.
Ear Community’s founder Melissa Tumblin says, “When we received Jaalah’s hearing device application for Dustin, our board members immediately wanted to help him with a Baha® 4 System from Cochlear Americas! This family has been through a lot and aside from all that little Dustin has endured, it is so important that he be given the help and opportunity to hear right away.”
On September 10th, 2014, Dustin was fitted with his new Cochlear™ Baha 4 Sound Processor with the Baha Softband. We feel honored to partner with organizations such as the Ear Community and donate the gift of hearing to those in need. Remember to share the joy of giving and celebrate the sounds of the holidays with those you love!
